Tranexamic Acid - What is it for

  • Tranexamic acid is an anti-fibrinolytic medicine. An anti-fibrinolytic agent slows down the processes that cause bleeding by preventing the blood clot from breaking down and hence, it reduces the amount of blood lost.
  • Tranexamic acid is useful for preventing bleeding. Hence, it may be used to treat menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding or heavy menses), to prevent bleeding in people with haemophilia, or for other conditions where bleeding must be controlled.

What side effects can Tranexamic Acid cause?

Tranexamic acid may cause some unwanted side effects. Generally, the common side effects tend to occur at the beginning of the treatment. Such side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea - Take if after food to minimise gastric side effects.
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle aches

Inform the doctor if any of the above side effects last for more than a few days or if they become serious or bothersome.

Rare but serious side effects may sometimes occur. Contact the doctor immediatelyy if any of the following are noticed:

  • Blurred vision
  • Colour vision disturbances
  • Tenderness or swelling in one leg, sudden breathlessness, severe pain in the chest or loss of feeling down one side of the body
  • Allergic reactions (swollen eyes, lips or face, itchy rashes, difficulty breathing)

Inform the doctor if any other unusual symptoms were noticed.

How should Tranexamic Acid be used?

  • If you are taking tranexamic acid for menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding), do not start taking the medicine until your menses has started.
  • Follow the instructions on the label carefully and consult the pharmacist or doctor if clarification is needed.
  • Tranexamic acid can be administered with or without food with a glass of water. However, if you experience gastric discomfort with taking the medication, it is advisable to take it after food.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

Missing doses makes the medication less effective. If you forgot to take the medication, take it as soon as you remember and then continue to take it as per normal. Otherwise, skip the missed dose and give the next dose at the usual time. Do not double or increase the dose.
