Benjamin Sheares Professorship in Academic Medicine Awardee

Named in honour of Dr Benjamin Sheares, Singapore's pioneer of modern obstetrics and gynaecology, the Benjamin Sheares Professorship in Academic Medicine recognises distinguished individuals who have made outstanding contributions to academic medicine through excellence in research, education, clinical care, leadership and international collaboration.

 

Clin Prof Ng is a paediatrician, geneticist and healthcare leader whose career spans more than four decades in healthcare, medical education and biomedical research. A defining contribution of Clin Prof Ng's career has been her role in shaping the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (AMC). As Co-Chair of the Academic Medicine Executive Committee, she established the integrated structures that underpin the AMC today. These include 15 Academic Clinical Programmes in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular medicine, neuroscience and obstetrics and gynaecology; 17 Disease Centres for conditions of significant national burden such as the Blood Cancer Centre, Diabetes Centre, Genomic Medicine Centre and Transplant Centre; and Joint Research Institutes including the SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Precision Medicine (PRISM), the Translational Immunology Institute and the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Institute. She championed the integration of clinical care, education and research, expanded academic pathways to include nurses, allied health professionals, administrators and engineers, and established performance monitoring systems to track and reward academic achievements across the AMC.

 

Clin Prof Ng has made significant contributions to genomics and precision medicine. Her research has been published in leading journals including a September 2025 paper in Academic Medicine on the AMC’s transformation and a 2026 study in Translational Science of Rare Diseases on postnatal growth in patients with sex chromosome aneuploidies. She remains deeply committed to mentoring future clinician leaders and clinician-scientists, and currently chairs the SingHealth Leadership Coaching and Mentoring Council.

 

Recognised with Singapore's highest accolades, including the President's Science and Technology Medal in 2021 and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) (Bar) in 2024, Clin Prof Ng was further honoured in 2026 with induction into the Duke-NUS Hall of Master Academic Clinicians and the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Distinguished Contributor Award.

 

Internationally, she has strengthened the AMC's reach and influence through collaborations across Asia and beyond. She serves on the Tsinghua Medicine Advisory Council, as Distinguished Advisor to the Chang Gung Medical Foundation, and as a Commissioner of the NUS-Lancet Pandemic Readiness, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation (PRIME) Commission, having driven regional collaborations across Hanoi, Medan and Sri Lanka.

 

Clin Prof Ng exemplifies the qualities of the Benjamin Sheares Professorship. Through her distinguished contributions to research, education, clinical care and leadership, she has helped transform academic medicine in Singapore and is exceptionally well placed to advance its mission going forward.
