Glucosamine is a natural component of the fluid around our joints. It may help to treat osteoarthritis and reduce joint pain and stiffness, especially of the knee, by strengthening the cartilage and increasing the fluid around the joints.
Glucosamine causes few, if any, side effects. However, some people may experience gastric discomfort, such as nausea, gas or heartburn.
Some glucosamine products may contain shellfish, this may cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to shellfish.
The usual dose is 1 tablet (500mg) taken three times a day, or 3 tablets taken once daily.
Glucosamine can be taken with or without food.
