Professor Stuart Cook, from Duke-NUS Medical School and the National Heart Centre Singapore, brings to winning team CureHeart his ground-breaking research in cardiovascular medicine, which has advanced understanding of the genetic basis of cardiomyopathy and cellular processes underlying myocardial disease.
Professor Stuart Cook is a leading cardiovascular research expert with extensive work in human genetics, heart muscle disease, fibrosis and cardiac imaging. Throughout his career, he has explored both the clinical and academic facets of the cardiovascular field in prestigious institutions that include Harvard University and Imperial College London.
Professor Cook and his research team overturned the misconception that interleukin 11 (IL11) was anti-fibrotic in a series of publications describing a critical role for IL11 in cardiac fibrosis. He went on to describe a role for Il11 in lung and liver fibrosis with seminal papers showing that therapeutic targeting of IL11 could reverse fibro-inflammatory conditions across organs.
He has since developed a large body of intellectual property (over 10 patents) relating to IL11 biology and antibodies that inhibit IL11 signalling, and co-founded a biotech startup in Singapore, Enleofen Bio, to develop first-in-class therapeutics for the treatment of diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and interstitial lung diseases. Enleofen Bio was subsequently acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim to advance anti-IL11 therapeutics towards treating human fibrotic diseases.
In 2012, Prof Cook was conferred a Singapore Translational Research (STaR) Investigator Award by National Medical Research Council. In 2017, he was awarded the American Heart Association Council on Genomic and Precision Medicine Medal of Honor, which recognises scientists who have dedicated international leadership in the field of genomic and precision medicine, and whose work has transformed the field. And in 2018, he was awarded the President’s Technology Award, the highest honour conferred upon research scientists and engineers in Singapore whose work has resulted in significant scientific, technological or economic benefits for the country.
