Tan Yew Oo Professorship in Pathology

Professor Teh and his team have focused on endemic Asian cancers with numerous seminal discoveries in the field of herbal carcinogen-related cancers and cholangiocarcinoma (biliary tract cancer). Besides that, he has an excellent track record of close and collegial collaborations with pathologist researchers, leading to, for example, the novel discovery of MED12 gene mutations in fibroadenomas and the progression genes to phyllodes tumors, which have to date resulted in 20 related publications and enhanced understanding of the pathogenesis of fibroepithelial tumours. His works have led to the 2015 SingHealth Distinguished Researcher Award, the 2015 Singapore President Science Award, the 2018 AACR (American Association of Cancer Research) Team Science Award, 2019 AACR Annual Meeting Plenary Lectureship and 2021 Japanese Cancer Association International Award. He has held membership on editorial boards of numerous biomedical journals including Science Translational Medicine, Cancer Research, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, and Cancer Science. He has also served on scientific advisory boards and holds adjunct professorships at numerous international institutions. To date, he has contributed to over 450 original publications, book chapters and reviews.

The conferment of this Distinguished Professorship is an endorsement of Professor Teh as an outstanding scientist who has made many novel discoveries in cancer pathology that have impacted its understanding and promoted advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment. His tremendous wealth of expertise in translational research in cancer is aligned with the goals of the Tan Yew Oo Professorship in Pathology, which will contribute to the progress of oncologic pathology and raise the visibility of Singapore pathology research internationally.
