Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers

29 Feb 2024 (Thu) | 0830 - 1600 | SKH AuditoriumIPE Day 2024 saw over 100 healthcare professionals coming together to learn and share knowledge about IPE, with the overall goal of improving patient care. Other than participants from various institutions within the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre, representatives from our key partner healthcare schools and institutions participated actively in the event.

The morning session kicked off with Prof Kevin Tan, Co-Lead of CIPHE, speaking on the importance of IPE, and introducing CIPHE and its key programmes which equip educators with skills to foster interprofessional collaboration. 

Prof Chan Choong Meng, Group Chief Education Officer, SingHealth, and Prof Shiva Sarraf-Yazdi, Interim Vice-Dean of Education, Duke-NUS, spoke about the importance and benefits of IPE in clinical and academic settings. 

In a keynote lecture, Prof Simon Kitto, Visiting Professor and Assistant Dean, Medical Humanities, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, brought his expertise in implementation science and shared insights on interprofessional education and practice (IPEP) in localised contexts and examples.

He expounded on the concept of translation, which is integral to effectively transform and implement associated models, concepts and practices of IPEP acquired from other countries to fit into our local context.

Through his sharing, the participants learnt to diagnose the IPEP needs in the healthcare workplace through an implementation science approach.

Prof Ong Hwee Kuan, Deputy Co-Lead of CIPHE, shared about the new IPE 101 Toolkit, which is a series of four explainer videos illustrating the concepts of IPE, its key competencies and how to incorporate it through an esablished framework, PIPEs. 

With the CIPHE website recently updated, Ms Catherine Poey, Deputy Co-Lead of CIPHE, led the participants through its different components and guided them on where to find useful information and resources.

Past participants of CIPHE's signature programmes VITAL and ehpic^TM – Ms Low Siew Ching, Assistant Director, Nursing, SKH, Dr Tan Boon Hian, Associate Consultant, Geriatric Medicine, KKH and Dr Siow Wei Ming, Senior Consultant, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, SKH – shared about their successful IPE projects, inspiring the audience to ideate and bring IPE into their own workplaces.

Highlight of the day, 'NNIPENDO', is an interactive collaborative game inspired by a popular multi-player video game. The objective of the game was to achieve the most gold coins through collaborating as a team, while keeping within the limitations of their assigned roles. A chaotic yet fun time of cutting and sticking paper, shouting instructions, and running across the room to get tasks done ensued. 

Through the post-game summary and debrief, participants reflected and shared their thoughts on the concepts of IPE found in the game, such as role clarification and team functioning.

IPE Day 2024 was a fruitful time of learning for many, from participants initially unaware of the term IPE, to educators who are well-versed in IPE. The event presented participants a platform for open conversations where they could share freely about their questions, thoughts and learnings. With the successful conclusion of the event, the way is paved for the advancement of IPE across our healthcare system as healthcare professionals build bridges and break barriers with one another.
