What is Thematic Analysis, and how could you apply it in your educational research?

Thematic Analysis is a widely used method for identifying, analysing and reporting patterns (or themes) within qualitative data. Join us as Dr Gareth Terry share on a six-step Thematic Analysis approach for qualitative education researchers! Developed by Prof Virginia Braun and Prof Victoria Clarke, renowned qualitative psychologists, the six-step Thematic Analysis approach has served as a rigorous and lucid guide for qualitative researchers interested in constructing rich and nuanced themes based on their data set. Their published paper on Thematic Analysis has also been cited more than 55,000 times since 2006.

Qualitative Research, Thematic Analysis and Contributions to Health Professions Education Knowledge

Qualitative research tends to be marginalised within many academic domains, including health professions education. This marginalisation is often due to misconceptions about the types of knowledge that can be generated from qualitative data, and what constitutes ‘valid’ knowledge.

Gain insights from Dr Gareth Terry on the ways that qualitative research can inform and enhance the production of health professions education knowledge. The lecture will draw on a thematic analysis of data collected in the Centre for Person Centred Research at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) over a ten-year period to illustrate the important insights qualitative data can provide.

It will also emphasise on the importance of qualitative work in providing a complete picture of the clinical encounter as well as detailing some important features of person-centred care that patient accounts can bring to this picture.

The workshop will introduce the principles and practice of reflexive Thematic Analysis as described by Professors Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke. It aims to support educators who are planning to undertake qualitative research, or those who have already collected qualitative data and are unsure how to analyse it, or those who are supervising or supporting students using qualitative data.

While focused broadly, the workshop which will be a mix of short lectures, practical activity, and group work, is aimed at supporting postgraduate students and those new to qualitative research or to reflexive thematic analysis.

Workshop Fee (subject to change):
This workshop is chargeable at S$500, subjected to prevailing GST rates.

About the Speaker

Dr Gareth Terry
Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Person Centred Research, School of Clinical Sciences,
Auckland University of Technology (AUT), New Zealand

Dr Gareth Terry has had a wealth of experience doing Thematic Analysis, and has conducted numerous empirical researches, wrote methodological publications and co-facilitated a number of thematic analysis workshops in Aotearoa/New Zealand and the United Kingdom. He is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Person Centred Research in the School of Clinical Sciences at AUT and is also co-author with Nikki Hayfield on the upcoming book on thematic analysis published by the APA.
