Template Analysis (TeA) is a form of thematic analysis that is highly flexible to the needs of different studies and emphasises a balance between freedom and structure in the analytic process. In this session, Prof Nigel King will outline the development of TeA and locate it within the wider spectrum of thematic approaches.

He will describe the typical steps in conducting TeA and explore the method’s key features, including the use of a priori themes, the iterative process of developing a template and the kinds of quality control techniques that can be used to ensure analysis is well-conducted. The points will be illustrated with his personal examples and others’ research in a range of settings, including health professions education.

AMEI Workshop:
How to Use Template Analysis for Qualitative Education Research

In this three-hour workshop, Prof King will take participants through the steps involved in conducting TeA. The session will have a strong hands-on emphasis, with participants working with extracts from Prof King’s own data to try out key aspects of TeA.

Participants should leave with a good grasp of the practicalities of analysis with TeA and an understanding of its distinctive features that will enable them to make informed decisions about how and when to use it. There will be a small amount of recommended (but not essential) prior reading for the workshop.

About the Speaker

Professor Nigel King

Professor, Applied Psychology, University of Huddersfiled, England, United Kingdom

Prof Nigel King is internationally recognised for his work in the use of qualitative methods, especially in “real world” settings, and has written extensively on Template Analysis, interview methods and visual elicitation methods, amongst other topics. Theoretically he draws on a variety of experiential traditions, especially phenomenology and Personal Construct Theory.

Prof King’s substantive interests include human meaning-making in relation to nature and outdoor spaces, bereavement experiences, and collaborative working in health and social care. He is also the co-author of the books “Interviews in Qualitative Research, (2nd Ed)”, and “Template Analysis for Business and Management Students” with Christine Horrocks and Jo Brooks.
