Conversations Inviting Change (CIC)

A narrative – based approach to encounter in health and social care that can enrich all professional work.

CIC arises from the simple idea that everyone – whether as a patient, client, learner or colleague – can benefit from telling stories about their experiences and being skillfully questioned about these. CIC uses a narrative approach to support people to explore new perspectives to address the challenges they faced. It has been adopted by clinicians in the UK and internationally in a variety of contexts: working both with patients and health professional colleagues for individual and team supervision.

The course was conducted in three sessions. Participants actively engaged in the sessions of the course and had numerous learns and enjoyed the sessions. Positive feedback was given.

  • Thanks for a really fruitful learning. Much more applicable than most " communications courses"
  • Main takeaway is the intentional efforts to be genuinely curious to get to know more depth about the person. I learnt from the sessions that the curious questions can help expand more avenues/channels to explore beyond the surface problems and challenges.
  • CIC is a good framework/method to carry on the conversation. But to apply the method, I need to take a step back to remind myself of the 7C core values. These values are the foundations to carry out the approach effectively.
  • I've learnt from the session that showing care can come in the form of being curious in asking open-ended questions, in addition to the typical ways that we know i.e. validation/active listening etc
