Dr Speliotes is the Keith Henley Endowed Professor of Gastroenterology and Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan. She is Associate Director of the University of Michigan MSTP program, and Elected Treasurer/Councilor/Institutional Representative of ASCI and Ethics Chair for AASLD. As Director of Precision Medicine, she built biobank, analytic, and training resources to use genomic and EMR data for subtyping human diseases and developing treatments for these. She is an international leader in the genetics of human obesity, MASLD, and cardiometabolic disease, having identified thousands of genetic variants that cause these diseases. She developed bioinformatic methods to identify causal tissues, genes and pathways highlighted by genomic analyses. One of her works is characterising the molecular action of MASLD-associated variants and implicated genes in cellular and mouse models, including using genome-wide CRISPR screening. She created genetic marker panels to identify obesity and MASLD subtypes and polygenic predictors of hepatic steatosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. An avid educator, she has trained over 60 individuals and serves on multiple national and international grant review and journal article review panels. Her work has earned her the Dean's Award for Best Basic Science Research, multiple talks at National and International Symposia, the MBioFAR award, and is helping to change the course of metabolic disease to improve patient care.
