The protocols-for-syndromes approach to evidence-based mental health care has failed to bring sustainable improvements in clinical outcomes. Process-based therapy provides an alternative model focused on treatment elements that target biopsychosocial processes of relevance to individual treatment goals. This presentation will provide healthcare educators with a working knowledge of this new paradigm.

This panel presentation is by a team of clinical psychologists who work in both delivering mental health services and in training clinical psychologists in Singapore. They have experience working across a wide range of settings and age groups delivering services to people with a wide variety of presenting problems. They are scientist-practitioners who adhere to the principles of evidence-based practice in their clinical work and teaching. In this session, they will describe how the new era of process-based therapy has affected education and training in mental health care. After providing a brief analysis of the factors that have led to this paradigm shift, they will illustrate how the process-based approach has been manifested in our understanding and treatment of mental health disorders.

Clinical case examples will be presented and an integrative summary will provide the audience with a comprehensive understanding of how this new era results in the person, not their diagnosis, being the focus of care. The overall aim of the presentation is to illustrate how educators in mental health care can move the focus of their teaching from the protocols-for-syndromes era to the process-based era, and thereby train mental health professionals to be more effective.

Learning Outcome(s):

By the end of the panel presentation, participants will be able to:

• Explain why the protocols-for-syndromes paradigm has been replaced by the trans-diagnostic paradigm of process-based therapy
• Describe the process-based approach to understanding mental health and its clinical implications
• Know the key dimensions to focus on for mental health care that will place the patient at the forefront of treatment
• Understand how to explore client problems by using the Extended Evolutionary Meta-Model (EEMM), as well as how to select appropriate treatment kernels to address client problems.

Healthcare educators and clinicians who provide training to those who work in mental health services. Participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of the principles of evidence-based practice.
