What’s Up With Everyone? Creative Healthcare Education

Date: 16 Sep 2022, Friday | Time: 1350 - 1435 | Track Type: Plenary Lecture | Format: Face-to-face & Virtual Livestream | Venue: The NAK Auditorium, Academia

Speaker: Prof Paul Crawford

This plenary session introduces the global field of health humanities and the way that the arts and humanities can bring new capacities and possibilities for healthcare, health and wellbeing. The title of the plenary relates to Prof Crawford's campaign for young people’s mental health, aimed at higher education students, aged 17 to 21. This work, in association with Academy-award winning Aardman (Shaun the Sheep, Wallace & Gromit etc), reached over 18m in the first few months of its launch in 2021. It also won Best Social Media & Content in the 2021 Design Week Awards. Check out the platform atwww.whatsupwitheveryone.com.

In connecting hearts and cultivating minds, there is a need to pay especial attention to the ideas and resources of young people, their creative contributions to the public health of nations. The ‘greatest confinement in history’ (Crawford & Crawford, 2021) witnessed during the COVID pandemic brought great mental distress for young people worldwide. The further upstream one works with young people on their mental health literacy, the better one can support their development in and through these and other crises of the mind. Creative industries, such as Aardman, can play a big role in this area as part of what can be called ‘creative public health’ (Crawford, 2020).
