Dr Michael Tan is the Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of the Arts Singapore, under NAFA-UAS. As a leading advocate for arts & design for health development in Singapore, he has mobilised his role as a creative health practitioner, researcher and educator to explore, interrogate, and imagine the culture of care through creative practice to promote human flourishing. His notable contributions include a seminal paper on the State of Arts and Health Development Singapore and his numerous collaborations with stakeholders such as the Agency for Integrated Care, NAC, Duke-NUS Medical School and SingHealth. His ongoing inquiries include mental health literacy, end of life and loss, disability, medical humanities and art in medicine. He is currently working with on a WHO Lancet Global Series; co-leading a systematic review exploring Arts participation as a health behaviour for Non-communicable Disease (NCD) prevention and health promotion. He is also a co-investigator in Creative Health Boards: A New Model for Embedding Creative Health and Community Assets in Health Systems across the UK awarded by the UKRI-AHRC Health Inequalities Programme. Other examples of his Art in medicine work in include Gesture of Care and Care and Kindness workshop.
