Professor Victor J. Dzau is the President of US National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and Vice Chair of US National Research Council. He is Chancellor Emeritus and James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Duke University and former CEO of the Duke University Health System. Previously, Professor Dzau was Hersey Professor and Chairman of Medicine at Harvard Medical School as well as Bloomfield Professor and Chairman of Medicine at Stanford.
He is an internationally acclaimed leader and physician scientist who has made a significant impact through his seminal research in cardiovascular medicine and genetics. His important work on the renin angiotensin and laid the foundation for development of the class of lifesaving drugs known as ACE inhibitors, used globally to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. He pioneered gene therapy for vascular disease.
At the NAM, he leads a strategy of innovation, action and equity. He designed and led important initiatives such as the Global Health Risk Framework; Global Health and Future Role of the US; Integrating Clinical Research into Epidemic Response: The Ebola Experience; Human Genome Editing; Grand Challenge in Climate Change and Human Health & Equity; and the Grand Challenge in Healthy Longevity and Redefining Academic Medicine.
Professor Dzau has served on the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director and as former chair of the Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee. Currently, he chairs the NIH Progenitor Cell Translational Consortium. He serves on the board of Imperial College Health Partners of UK. He chairs International Science Advisory Committee of the Qatar Precision Medicine Institute and Peter Munk Cardiac Center of University of Toronto.
Professor Dzau launched the Duke Institute of Global Health, founded the Division of Global Health Equity at Harvard Brigham Women’s Hospital and chairs the International Board of McGill’s School of Population and Global Health. He serves on the board of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, is a Principal of the Global ACT Accelerator, was on the interim board of CEPI. Professor Dzau serves as advisor to the G20 High Level independent panel on Financing the Pandemic Preparedness and Response and co-chaired the G20 Scientific Panel on Pandemic preparedness and Response. He served on the Board of Health Governors of the World Economic Forum.
Professor Dzau has been actively involved with Singapore for 18 years and played a pivotal role in the formation of Duke NUS School of Medicine in 2005. He serves on the Singapore International Advisory Council of Health and Biomedical Sciences, the Board of Singapore Health Services Pte Ltd, the Academic Medicine Advisory Council of SingHealth and Duke NUS. He chairs the Singapore precision medicine initiative PRECISE. In 2014, he received the National University of Singapore’s Outstanding Service Award and the 2014 Singapore National Day Public Service Medal. In 2019, he was named an Honorary Citizen of Singapore.
Among his many honors and recognitions are the Gustav Nylin Medal from the Swedish Royal College of Medicine, the Max Delbruck Medal from Germany, the Research Achievement Award from the American Heart Association, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Poulzer Prize of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Henry Freisen International Prize. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Sinica and European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He has received 18 honorary doctorates.
