St Jude - VIVA Paediatric Pathology Symposium

The St Jude-VIVA Paediatric Pathology Symposium was held on 8-9 March 2018 at Academia, SingHealth. We were honoured to have Dr David Ellison, Dr Armita Bahrami and Dr Teresa Santiago from St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

42 local and overseas delegates attended this closed meeting. It was a great opportunity for our overseas delegates to network and learn more about paediatric pathology. The lecture topics included updates in the WHO classification of brain tumours; medulloblastomas including molecular subtyping; central nervous system primitive tumours including ETMR, AT/RT and other embryonal tumours; and the pathology of paediatric gliomas, sarcomas, bone tumours, neuroblastomas and renal tumours.

In addition to the lectures, our attendees contributed challenging cases of their own, and had stimulating case discussions. Some interesting cases discussed included poorly differentiated skin adnexal carcinoma; calcifying nested stromal - epithelial tumours (CNSET) of the liver with extensive abdomen dissemination; and choroid plexus carcinoma. It was truly an engaging session.

A tour of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital was organized in which participants could view the local facilities for paediatric pathology in Singapore. A dinner of chicken rice and a tour of Gardens by the Bay followed this.

This event was a success, and we hope to have continued collaboration through regular conference web meetings.
