Study Trip 2018 Europe

Similar to the previous year, MSKSC ACP organized an overseas study trip. For this study trip, which took place from 16 to 23 May 2018, MSKSC ACP visited Zurich (Switzerland) and Maastricht (Netherlands) where the following institutions; University Hospital Zurich (UHZ), ETH Zurich – The Institute for Biomechanics (IfB), the Maastricht University Medical Centre (UMC+) and Radboud University Medical Centre are sited respectively. The aim of the study trip was to visit and learn from renowned international academic institutions and medical centres in the areas of harnessing robotics and microsurgery for clinical advances in the musculoskeletal disciplines, medical pedagogy for faculty and trainee development and to explore possible research collaborations in biomechanics and tissue engineering.

University Hospital Zurich

The hospital has 43 clinics and institutes and has 8,500 employees from 86 different countries. UHZ is also heavily involved in clinical and research activities including collaborations with more than 30 countries and has 2000 employees working on research activities in the areas of regenerative medicine, personalized medicine and nursing care research, just to name a few.

ETH Zurich – The Institute for Biomechanics (IfB)

The Institute for Biomechanics (IfB) is a multidisciplinary research unit dedicated to the biomechanical investigation of the human body from a macroscopic (body) to a microscopic (cell) scale, while maintaining ethical standards and a philosophy of respect and compassion for all life. The institute consists of six laboratories that work together to conduct research on the boundaries between medicine and engineering and they are, Orthopaedic Technology, Bone Biomechanics, Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Movement Biomechanics, Tissue Engineering & Biofabrication and Immunoengineering & Regenerative Medicine.

Maastricht University Medical Centre (UMC+)

The Maastricht UMC+ has a number of services and facilities (i.e. Biobank, Proteomics Centre etc.) available for support in the preparation and implementation of scientific research. The research of Maastricht UMC+ [consisting of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) and the Academic Hospital Maastricht (azM)] is clustered in research institutes (also called a School), focusing on thematic research within the scope of the main research lines.

Radboud University Medical Centre

Radboud UMC’s key strength is their combination of medical life sciences and clinical practice. Their medical center has an impressive infrastructure comprising of three research institutes and state-of-the-art technology centers. Their scientists perform cross-disciplinary research regarding 18 clinically relevant research themes.
