Undergraduate Education

Overview

The Paediatrics ACP initiated the Paediatric Core Curriculum (PCC) in 2012 to re-focus and standardise medical education for all medical students coming to the institutions for clinical teaching. The PCC provides a good foundation in Paediatric Medicine and serves as a platform for the development of residency and fellowship programmes.

We are pleased to share the following education initiatives, which are crucial to ensure a continuum of paediatric medicine education for tomorrow's doctors.

Developmental Clinical Skills Programme (DCSP) for Paediatric training through the education continuum from undergraduate to PGY1 programmes

The Paediatrics ACP plays a pivotal role in paediatric undergraduate education for all medical schools in Singapore. This role enables us to set the benchmark for paediatric training of clinical skills and knowledge.

We provides majority of the schools’ summative assessments and formative evaluations.

The Clinical Skills Programme’s main aim is to develop audiovisual formats to assist the teaching of essential paediatric examinations. The audiovisuals will include some domain systems to demonstrate in young child and infants age groups, including the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, abdominal system, neurological examination of tone, motor and reflexes and last but not least, new-born examination.

Faculty Standard Setting for Workplace-Based Assessments in Paediatrics

As the leading training site, KK Women’s and Children's Hospital (KKH) provides paediatric training for approximately 600 undergraduates and postgraduate medical students from the LKCMedicine, YLLSoM and Duke-NUS each academic year. During their paediatrics posting in KKH, the assessment structure for students from the three medical schools are different. To facilitate standard setting of faculty, Dr Cristelle Chow, Consultant, General Paediatrics Service, KKH and her team developed a set of context-specific workplace-based assessment videos. The collection of videos is also adopted as a teaching material for the faculty and medical students.
