TALKS & SPEAKERS

Prof Julian Thumboo is a Rheumatologist and Health Services Researcher. He graduated from the National University of Singapore and trained in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology (with an interest in Clinical Epidemiology) in Singapore and at the Mayo Clinic. His research in Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) led to the development of the Singapore Health and Well Being Quality of Life Scales, which are in the process of being implemented in clinical care, identification of ways to improve outcomes for Rheumatological diseases and over 300 publications. He is Research Director and Director of Health Services Research for Singapore General Hospital and Advisor for the SingHealth Centre for Population Health Research and Implementation.

Prof Thumboo’s talk:

Using Health Services Research to Improve Clinical Care and Outcomes

This presentation shall provide (1) an overview of the Health Services Research (HSR) and how it can improve clinical care and outcomes, using examples from the literature (including radiology) (2) a framework for priority areas in HSR to address unmet clinical needs and (3) avenues for HSR in the Academic Medical Centre (AMC).

Dr Goh Poh Sun MBBS(Melb), FRCR, FAMS, MHPE(Maastricht), FAMEE is an Associate Professor at the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (YLLSOM) and National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also Senior Consultant at Department of Diagnostic Radiology, National University Hospital (NUH), National University Health System (NUHS), and Associate Member, Centre for Medical Education, YLLSOM, NUS. He has been a Member of the AMEE (Association for Medical Education Europe) TEL (Technology Enhanced Learning) Committee since 2011. He is also a Medical Educator, with Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) from Maastricht University (2012); with deep passion for both eLearning/Technology enhanced Learning and Faculty Development - locally and internationally. Dr Goh is formally trained as, and is an in-house Coach at YLLSOM.

Prof Goh’s talk:

Exploring Emerging Opportunities - Future Roles, Technology and Scholarship in Radiology Education

In this plenary lecture, Prof Goh will take the opportunity to explore emerging opportunities - in the role as educators, in how they leverage on technology, and approaches to scholarship, by considering the following questions:

  • What are their current, and potential future roles? How can they do more? Expand their activities? Have greater impact? Why and how should they do this?
  • How can they take full advantage of technology to do more? Scale? Deepen? Extend?
  • How can they approach scholarship? Engage in scholarship? For all?

Dr Lim Chee Yeong is a senior consultant radiologist in SGH Department of Diagnostic Radiology, specialising in musculoskeletal diseases. He is also an avid medical educator, and currently the Programme Director of the SingHealth Diagnostic Radiology Residency Programme.

Dr Lim’s talk:

Programmatic Assessment: Making Sense of ACGME Competencies, Milestones & EPAs in Resident Clinical Learning Environments

Programmatic assessment is an arrangement of assessment methods designed across the curriculum, combined and planned to support student learning and decision making. By triangulating data from different assessment sources, educators are able to obtain rich and complex information about learner development and programme processes. In this talk, we will explore how work-based assessment techniques nested in authentic clinical environments are deeply integrated into the curriculum of the radiology resident programme, thereby driving competency-based education.

A/Prof Lionel Cheng entered radiology at the turn of the century, when films and alternators were still in vogue. He was then swept up in the world of RIS, PACS and imaging informatics, MRI operations, medical student education, before landing in his most recent roles as Clinical Director (Artificial Intelligence) in the SGH Future Health System Department and Chief Data and Digital Officer for SGH.

Prof Cheng’s talk:

Harnessing the Power of RADSC Data: Pipedream or Plausible Reality?

Radiology has been generating standardised and highly useful digital data for decades. With the advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning, we have the opportunity to make a quantum leap in how we acquire, analyse and utilise radiological data. Yet, amidst the frenzy of generative AI and promise of digital nirvana, we seem to struggle with relatively simple tasks like data extraction and annotation. Prof Cheng shares his perspectives of this apparent paradox as a diagnostic radiologist and accidental AI ambassador.

Ms Ong Siok Luan is Deputy Director, from Office of Research Integrity & Compliance.

Ms Elayne Wong is Assistant Director, from Centralised Institutional Review Board.

Ms Ong and Ms Wong’s talk:

Research, IRB and Compliance

This talk will share on the following:

  • the needs for IRB review for the different types of research
  • the different types of reviews
  • subtleties on terminologies like de-identified data, waiver of consent, waiver of documentation of consent
  • what it means to be compliant to regulatory requirements

Mr Cedric Bee is a seasoned radiographer with over a decade of experience in both private and government hospitals. He excels not only in his clinical role but also as a mentor, training new radiographers and sharing his expertise with passion. His primary interests lie in healthcare interprofessional education and collaborations, particularly in projects aimed at reducing door-to-needle time for stroke interventions through interdisciplinary teamwork. Cedric is a firm believer in the power of collaboration to enhance patient care delivery, making him a valuable voice in healthcare.

Ms Fam Su Rong is an Advanced Practice Nurse from NNI, Division of Nursing.

Mr Bee and Ms Fam’s talk:

Neuro-endovascular Thrombectomy Inter-Professional Collaboration (IPC) Simulation

Hands-on clinical skills are fundamental and constitute a key role for procedurists, radiology nurses and radiographers. The traditional Master-Apprentice model of training has multiple shortcomings due to lack of real-life opportunities, possible risk to patient safety, and lack of uniformity in training. Furthermore, learners may be unprepared in stressful, time-sensitive, and eventful situations such as Endovascular Therapy (EVT) in hyperacute stroke treatment.

The team participated in an IPC simulation workshop, which aimed to equip each team member with the appropriate attitude, knowledge and skills needed to achieve seamless coordination in time sensitive EVT. Expect insightful and inspiring sharings that emphasise teamwork and innovation in healthcare.
