Effective Communication: Lessons from Human Factors Science

Date: 20 Oct 2022, Thu | Time: 1500 - 1630 | Track Type: Workshop
Format: Face-to-face | Venue: Whitespace, Level 2, Academia
Category: Patient Safety & Quality Improvement | Workshop Level: NA

Speaker: Dr Yin Shanqing

Oftentimes, it is all too easy to blame our individual selves for the mistakes that we make. Although humans are imperfect, our performances are also heavily influenced by the artifacts and environment we rely on to deliver quality care. This is why human factors science is important as it studies the work systems which we operate in, and provides insights on why we succeed or fail despite the best of intentions. In true spirit of the S3 Conference 2022, this workshop uses classroom games and simulations to explore some of the systemic considerations that help or hinder safety and efficiency at work. Participants will gain first-hand experiences on some of the concepts affecting patient safety, and discover how systems can be designed to better serve its users. Be prepared to volunteer yourself and have fun!

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Discover fun ways to explore how performance is affected by system components
  2. Understand some human factors concepts relating to safe care delivery
  3. Recognise common pitfalls in deriving ineffective improvement solutions
