Dr Melanie Kwan
Senior Music Therapist, KK Women's & Children's Hospital

Melanie Kwan, PhD, MT-BC, pioneered medical and palliative care music therapy services in Singapore with hospitalized babies and children, women surviving cancer, persons with mental health challenges, dementia, brain injuries, cognitive impairments, or other neurological concerns, along with hospice and end of life care. She is passionate about fostering trauma-resiliency in teenagers/young adults and resourcing formal and informal carers with strategies for music and wellbeing. She has served as the Western Regional Liaison of the World Federation of Music Therapy, as the founding Secretary and past President of the Association for Music Therapy, Singapore, and currently sits on the editorial board of Music Therapy Perspectives. She was also the Director of an undergraduate music therapy programme in the USA and Assistant Professor. Her research interests are grounded in southeast Asian culture and focus on connecting families together through music in preventive health, rehabilitation, as pain management, or legacy projects.
