Date: 30 October, Wednesday| Time: 14:00 - 15:30 | Venue: Academia Room L1-S3, SGH

Speakers: Dr Mok Yee HuiDr Nicola Ngiam & SPAN

Moderator: Mr Daniel Kong

Programme Details:

A series of sharings by two SPAN advocates, one who is a caregiver and another who provides a patient perspective, and Dr Mok. The session will also involve another medical professional who works in narrative medicine, and will conclude with a panel discussion and Q&A that is moderated by a humanities scholar working in the area of illness narratives.

This session approaches the theme of narrative in medicine by focusing on the lives of caregivers and patients. Mr Kenneth Mah and Ms Carol Lim are SPAN advocates who represent these perspectives, and their stories will be complimented by Dr Mok Yee Hui, whose practice is interested in narrative medicine and the importance of narrative both in the clinic, and in the larger context of health and life.

The panel discussion and Q&A between Mr Mah, Ms Lim, Dr Mok, Dr Nicola and Daniel (a medical humanities scholar) will allow for a fruitful analysis of the varying forms of narrative that exist for caregivers, patients, doctors, and researchers. By presenting narrative as complicated, multi-faceted, and as an ongoing process of story-telling that accompanies medicine and daily life, the session will be a detailed study of the intersection of medicine and narrative.
