Technology Enhanced Learning and Healthcare Simulation – Supporting a Continuum of Learning

Date: 20 Oct 2022, Thu | Time: 1635 - 1720 | Track Type: Plenary
Format: Face-to-face & Virtual Livestream | Venue: The NAK Auditorium, Academia

Speaker: Prof Fernando Bello

Healthcare simulation is well established with different types of simulation environments (fixed facilities, in situ, mobile) and simulator technologies (physical models, virtual reality simulators, hybrid simulators) supporting a variety of training and assessment activities. Equally, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is routinely used to support learning and teaching through online sessions, e-learning packages, virtual learning environments, serious games, and others. Whilst the individual advances and benefits of simulation and TEL cannot be denied, there is a lack of continuity, coordination, and integration between them. A learner may be exposed to a number of healthcare simulation and TEL encounters throughout his/her career, but these are likely to be isolated events disjoint from each other, failing to acknowledge the advantages of coordinating and more explicitly linking such educational resources in a Continuum of Learning. Such advantages may include offering a progression in the level of complexity, realism, interactivity and collaboration of the simulation and TEL, as well as the potential for resource management, rationalisation, and continuous formative assessment.

This keynote will explore how TEL and Healthcare Simulation may be better integrated to support a multi-dimensional Continuum of Learning that can follow different patterns suitable for learners at diverse points in their learning journey.
