Prof Alan Bleakley
Emeritus Professor
Faculty of Health, University of Plymouth

Prof Alan Bleakley is Emeritus Professor of Medical Education and Medical Humanities at Plymouth University Peninsula School of Medicine. He has an academic background in Zoology, Psychology, Cultural Studies, Psychotherapy, and Medical Education, and has practiced clinically as a psychodynamic psychotherapist. For many years, he developed and ran postgraduate training courses for psychotherapists. Before retirement, he was head of medical education research at Peninsula Medical School, Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, where he also established an innovative core, compulsory, and assessed medical humanities curriculum in the undergraduate medicine and surgery course. 

He was a founding member of the Academy of Medical Educators and past President of the Association for Medical and Health Humanities. He has established an international reputation in the fields of medical education and medical humanities and has given many keynote talks, particularly in Canada and North America. He has published over 200 articles and book chapters, and twenty academic books. He is also a widely published poet with seven collections.
