L2 ASSESS! Creating An Assessment System (ESSENTIAL)

What is a system of assessment? How do you know if you are truly assessing students on what they are being taught? How do you decide which method of assessment to use? This workshop will allow participants to learn about and apply foundational concepts in assessment, common assessment methods used in education, and practice setting up a system of assessment for a course. It will be useful to educators who are developing their assessment systems from scratch or seeking to improve existing assessment systems.

Learning Objectives

This planning workshop is part of the Level 2 Advanced Educators Workshops, designed to help interprofessional educators develop advanced competencies in the ASSESS! Domain.

It addresses the Academy of Medical Educators Professional Standards, Domain 3 (Assessment of Learning) Level 2 Elements:

3.2.1 Relates assessments to the educational outcomes of the course or programme
3.2.4 Selects assessment methods that match the purpose, content and level of the learner
3.2.5 Uses a broad range of methods to assess learners

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

Describe the key concepts of the utility model of assessment.
Relate assessment to the educational outcomes of a course/training programme.
Describe when and how to use assessment methods commonly used in medical education.
Select assessment methods that match the purpose, and content of learning.
Use a broad range of methods to assess learners by designing a comprehensive system of assessment for a given course/training programme.

Participants need to have completed Level 1 Online Essentials (or equivalent)
Participants are expected to have reviewed the specified pre-workshop material
Participants are required to complete and submit a system of assessment for a course/training program of their choice based on the given template within 2 months of completion of workshop
