A/Prof Lee Yie Hou’s research centres around endometrial pathology and impact on implantation by understanding the role of metabolism and inflammation in endometriosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, spontaneous miscarriage. His translational interests and efforts are focused on improving the management of these gynaecological disorders (novel biomarkers and druggable pathways), recurrent pregnancy loss, and spontaneous miscarriage. With growing appreciation that pathologies are far more complex than previously thought, gynaecologic disorders will benefit greatly from a systems approach, a paradigm which objectively study biological changes at the global level across individuals, time and space (predictive medicine). Such stratification not only precede gross phenotypic changes and clinical manifestations but also allow for medical decisions and interventions to be tailored for maximum efficacy (personalized medicine). Major approaches are focused on using untargeted and targeted metabolomic/lipidomic studies, combining molecular and cellular assays in well-phenotyped clinical samples.

Research opportunities include:

  1. Validation of non-invasive endometriosis and miscarriage biomarkers in Asian and non-Asian populations;

  2. Biocharacterization of metabolism, inflammation, and autoantibody response in endometrial disorders for defining correlates of pathophysiological factors;

  3. Exploring non-hormonal approaches including cellular therapy (endometrial progenitor/stem cells or immune cells) to improve endometrial physiology.
