Peripartum management represents the culmination of the expecting mother’s pregnancy and, as all obstetricians and midwives know only too well, is a crucial period when things in the labour ward can unexpectedly go very wrong despite the best laid antenatal plans. Reviews of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity from around the world repeatedly show that a significant proportion of these are potentially avoidable, and issues of skills, experience, training, communication and governance continue to underlie them.
While the ongoing pandemic has seen a profusion of virtual courses and webinars covering high risk pregnancy and fetal medicine, there is a relative dearth of courses focusing on peripartum and in particular intrapartum care.
It is our hope that this inaugural course fills this gap. KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Singapore General Hospital together deliver 14 thousand women annually, and this two-day course draws on the collective experience and expertise of clinicians from the two perinatal centres of the SingHealth cluster
