About the Event
Biodiversity encompasses the diversity and variation of all living organisms within their ecosystems, playing a crucial role in human health and well-being. The use of botanical knowledge for disease treatment and health promotion has been practiced for centuries.
Hear from Prof Teh Bin Tean and Dr Hong Jing Han as they discuss how advances in science and technology, particularly in fields like genomics and artificial intelligence, are creating new opportunities to explore, utilise, and further develop this area for a greater impact on medicine, health, and wellness.
About the Speakers
Prof Teh Bin Tean is the Director of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Biodiversity Medicine (BD-MED). He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the 2015 SingHealth Distinguished Researcher Award, the Singapore President Science Award, and the 2021 Japanese Cancer Association International Award. Prof Teh is also a distinguished member of the Royal College of Pathologists and American Institute of Clinical Investigation. He serves on the Strategic Planning Group for the Saudi National Institute of Health and as a Scientific Advisor to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan.
Dr Hong Jing Han is a Plant Biologist from the SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Biodiversity Medicine (BD-MED), where she investigates medicinal plants with potential anti-cancer properties at the SingHealth Duke-NUS BD-MED, with a focus on their effects and mechanisms in cancer models, particularly cholangiocarcinoma. Dr Hong integrates expertise in plant biology and cancer research to explore natural compounds for drug discovery, contributing to the advancement of biodiversity medicine.
About the Facilitator
Asst Prof Jason Chan is a Director of the Medical Oncology Research at National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). He is a Clinical Advisor of the SingHealth Duke-NUS BD-MED, and Director of the Cancer Discovery Hub, a core research lab focusing on research discovery and innovation. Asst Prof Chan has a special interest in translational cancer research on Asian-prevalent cancers.
