Dr Poh Kai Chin, Consultant, Department of Respiratory Medicine, SKH, shared that lung adenocarcinoma is the predominant subtype of lung cancer in men and women in Singapore. It was reported in the article that non-smokers are more likely to develop this type of cancer and are susceptible to lung disease due to factors such as exposure to second or third-hand smoke. Dr Poh addressed the dangers of second and third-hand smoke, highlighting that third-hand smoke – the residue from cigarettes left on surfaces after smoking – is potentially carcinogenic and can linger for many months, increasing cancer risk by 20-30% with prolonged exposure.
