Profile

Dr Claire Lixian Peterson is an Associate Consultant and Glaucoma Fellow at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). She earned her MBBS from King’s College London and worked at the Royal Free Hospital in London, before returning to Singapore in 2017 under the Ministry of Health’s Pre-employment Grant. Dr Peterson completed her ophthalmology training at SNEC, achieving specialist qualifications from both the National University of Singapore and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Notably, she was awarded the prestigious Harcourt Medal for securing the highest global score in the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' FRCOphth Oral exams, becoming the first Singaporean recipient of this award. Her commitment to patient care was further recognised with the Singhealth Health Quality Gold Award and the Singhealth Outstanding Resident Award at the completion of her training.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr Peterson is passionate about global ophthalmology initiatives, and serves on SNEC’s Global Ophthalmology Committee, which focuses on education, outreach, and capacity building in the region. She has participated in regional cataract camps across Myanmar, India, and Nepal, and performed small incision cataract surgery. As a surgical trainer at SNEC, Dr Peterson is active in resident education on small incision cataract surgery techniques. Her dedication to teaching earned her the SNEC Young Educator Award and the Singhealth Associate in Education Award for her contributions to resident, student, and nursing education.

Dr Peterson is also active in the wider ophthalmology community and is the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology, Young Ophthalmologist Chair. She played a key role in organizing the 2nd Global Young Ophthalmologist Summit in Singapore in January 2023, attracting over 200 participants from around the world. She also serves on the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Young Ophthalmologist Editorial Board, where she writes and reviews articles. She has also been invited to speak at international ophthalmology conferences and contributes to scientific research on eye health and ophthalmology.
