Cantharidin Treatment - What is it for

Cantharidin is a solution that is used for the treatment of skin conditions such as molluscum and warts. Cantharidin is a blistering agent and can only be used by healthcare professionals.

After Cantharidin Application

  • Wash off with soap and water after 4 hours.
  • Treated area may turn red and swollen.
  • Blistering is expected.
  • The fluid in the blister may appear clear or blood-filled.

Blister Management

  • Reduce blister size to minimise pain and discomfort:
    a) Carefully puncture the base of blister using a sterile needle.
    b) Gently compress on the blister with soft gauze to drain out the fluid.
    c) Do not peel off the blistered skin.
  •  If the blister becomes very large and/or painful:
    a) Walk in to the Dermatology Clinic at KKH@Halifax, if visiting between 8.30am-3.00pm on weekdays.
    b) Proceed to Children’s Emergency, if outside of stated hours or on weekends/public holidays.
