He was also the past Head of Department of the Medical Retina Department at SNEC from 2014 to 2017.

In the clinical setting, Professor Yeo fosters learning by challenging residents to think critically about clinical cases and welcomes questions. He is directly involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students, ophthalmology residents, senior residents, local and international fellows, as well as nurses and allied health staff. Professor Yeo is currently also a basic and intermediate cataract teacher and a retina surgeon guiding fellows in both medical and surgical retina work.

He is constantly innovating to improve the teaching curriculum, for instance, he has spearheaded new educational directives by including virtual learning platforms, such as the launch of the SNEC E-Studio, to cope with the challenges of in-person teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Professor Yeo was a key driver to embark SNEC to become the Ophthalmic Centre of Excellence for Ophthalmic Education for the region. He has forged collaborations with numerous eye hospitals overseas to develop the Education Consortium.

On the research front, Professor Yeo’s research interest includes Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), and Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy (PCV). He is actively involved in clinical trials as a Principal Investigator for several international clinical trials for these two conditions. He has also engaged in primate work to develop animal models for AMD and has looked at novel strategies for delivering drugs for conditions under the retina.

For his work, Professor Yeo received the SingHealth GCEO Excellence Awards – Outstanding Educator Award in 2013. The Outstanding Educator Award is given to the selected few who were exemplary role models in their respective fields, demonstrating continuous improvements as lifelong learners. Most recently, he was conferred the AMEI Golden Apple Awards 2022 – AMEI Generativity Award for the Educators (Medical) Category. This prestigious award recognises educators in SingHealth and Duke-NUS across the various healthcare professions who exemplify the spirit of generativity by actively giving back to the education landscape through nurturing and mentoring the younger generation of healthcare professionals.
