Pyrazinamide is used in combination with other drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis or other related conditions.

What side effects can Pyrazinamide cause?

Generally, the common side effects tend to occur at the beginning of treatment. Such side effects include:

  • Stomach discomfort. If the medicine upsets the stomach, take the medicine with food

  • Sunburn. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight. Wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen (SPF > 15) when exposure to sunlight for long durations is unavoidable.​

  • Joint pain and swelling

  • ​Inform your doctor if any of the above side effects lasts for more than a few days or if they become serious or bothersome.

    Rare but serious side effects may sometimes occur. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of the following:

  • Yellowing of eyes, skin rash

  • Darkened urine or pale stools

  • Persistent nausea, vomiting and intense fatigue

Inform the doctor if any other unusual symptoms are noticed.

How should Pyrazinamide be used?

Pyrazinamide is usually taken daily, with or without food. Follow the instructions on the label carefully and approach the pharmacist or doctor if clarification is needed.

Pyrazinamide comes in the form of tablets. It may be swallowed whole with or made into a mixture with water before taking

Do not stop taking this medicine unless instructed by the doctor. Stopping this me​dicine can worsen the infection or result in resistance.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

Take the dose as soon as it is remembered and then continue to take it as one normally would. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose that is missed and administer the next dose at the usual time.

Do not double or increase the dose.
