Dr Jolene Liu, Associate Consultant, Department of Respiratory Medicine, SKH, explained that smokers find it hard to quit smoking as they have formed a habit and become addicted to nicotine. Some people smoke as a quick fix to cope with stress or to give that feel-good boost. Nicotine addiction leads to cravings and withdrawal symptoms, making it challenging for smokers to quit despite being aware of the health risks. Dr Liu also shared the health risks of smoking, the harmful effects of second-hand smoke from e-cigarettes, and provided tips for managing withdrawal symptoms using the 4Ds method (distractions, delay, deep breathing and drinking water). The article also included details of SKH's upcoming Community Health Fair on Saturday, 31 August 2024, at Fernvale Community Club from 11am to 8pm.
