Tegafur/Uracil (UFT® ) - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Tegafur/Uracil (UFT® ) cause?

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite may occur
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weakness or loss of strength
  • Decrease in the white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets may occur.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Severe abdominal pain and diarrhea
  • Rashes
  • Sudden onset or gradual worsening of cough and/or breathlessness
  • Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
  • Fever of 38˚C or higher, severe sores in the mouth and throat
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising or black tarry stools
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark tea-coloured urine

Before taking Tegafur/Uracil (UFT® ), what precautions must I follow?

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you:
    • Are taking any other medicines or supplements e.g. warfarin, phenytoin
    • Have any other medical conditions e.g. heart problems.
  • Effective birth control measures are recommended for both men and women during and for 3 months after stopping treatment with UFT. Inform your doctor if you plan to get or suspect that you are pregnant.
  • Do not breastfeed. Inform your doctor if you intend to breastfeed while taking UFT.
